Happy 5th Birthday

Big canvas the kids painted at the party

Children’s birthday parties. I am exhausted. Now I appreciate why people (a) hire a hall (b) get the caterers in (c) call professional entertainers. Saying that, we had a wonderful time. The single most important thing was that No.1 had a great time: “That was the best day of my life” she said as the last guests left.
Things I have learned: bubble makers transport adults and children alike and are a brilliant investment; homemade pinata can be indestructable – we ended up perforating ours so the tots could break them and spill foil and sweets everywhere; cif is my new best friend – no damage from the extensive painting the kids did – I hope their parents got everything out of their clothes.

Unbreakable pinata

The food I will definitely make again: any cakes from the River Cottage Cake handbook, which is my new best and most reliable cookbook;  ken hom chinese five spices pork belly; toffee apples with coloured pencils for the sticks; the river cafe green book recipe for chocolate ginger cake.

The birthday cake itself: 6 layers of alternating victoria sponge and chocolate sponge stuck together with our raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream, then the whole teetering tower coated thickly with chocolate fudge and topped with smarties and paper bunting. No more chocolate ever. Think we used about 3kg for the whole party.

Tall chocolate cake! - 6 layers, shocking amounts of chocolate
